Social networking may take a hit
2011-08-22
A German public official who needs to clip the wings of social-networking site Facebook threatened Fri. To fine any 3rd party sites that employ a Facebook "like" button. As privacy commissioner for the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Thilo Weichert is independent of central authority and has broad powers to both analyze and fine all site proprietors in his state. He revealed he would go after personal and public sites that feature Facebook's "like" and "dislike" buttons, which show a thumbs-up or thumbs-down symbol and permit web users to rank the web sites they encounter. Weichert charged the buttons break privacy because they could enable Facebook to compile a profile of all of the sites that one PC user liked or detested and so guess at their views. Regardless of if a user isn't registered with Facebook, the US internet site can spot when the same PC is used to vote on a succession of sites. Facebook denied the allegations. It conceded that it received technical info which may be employed in identifying each user PC, but asserted it removed that info inside ninety days in concord with Western european Union law and industry standards.
