Microsoft at war with Google
2011-08-01
E-mail remains one of the killer applications on the Web. Research from the Radicati Group shows that the quantity of worldwide e-mail accounts is projected to extend from 2.9 bill in 2010 to over 3.8 bill by 2014. While many users carry on using applications like Outlook to send and receive e-mail, more folks are using webmail ( online e-mail ) services like Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo! Mail to speak thru e-mail. Free e-mail services are subsidized by advertising, and this system has been transformed by Google's contextual advertising system which can provide advertising related to the e-mail content applicable to users. This offers a higher chance of success for advertisers, and thus higher earnings for Google. Adverts that crop up in Gmail are like the advertisements that appear next to the Google search results and on content pages across the web. In Gmail, adverts are related to the content of a user's e-mail messages. "Our goal is to provide Gmail users with advertisements that are handy and germane to their interests," Google says.
