Full Profile Email School of Cape City and Rhodes College become associate members of Net Service Suppliers organisation the Net Service Suppliers organisation ( ISPA ) lately welcomed their first tertiary education establishments on board as members. Both the College of Cape City and Rhodes Varsity became associate members of the organisation, reflecting a growing recognition on the part of schools that they're now acting as Web Service Suppliers ( ISPs ). According to Ant Brooks, director of ISPA, affiliations that are categorized as 'information systems service providers' by the Electronic Communications and Transactions ( ECT ) Act can be held responsible for content carried over, hosted and / or cached on their networks. "While not providing Net access services to the general public, colleges do provide access to closed user-groups. Because of this, it is advantageous to such establishments to join ISPA, as the ECT Act gives ISPs protection from 3rd party content carried over, or hosted on their networks," declared Brooks. Nonetheless ISPs only gain legal protection if they're a member of a business Representative Body ( IRB ) that's recognized by the Minister of Communications. ISPA is just such an entity." "The affiliate membership class permits associations in related fields to take part in ISPA's activities, and to gain the protections offered by its standing as an IRB. This membership class is good for tutorial establishments, which pay the same costs as tiny members do, though affiliates remain non-voting members of ISPA." associate members are still needed to obey the code of behavior, and are also entitled to connect to ISPA's Web exchanges in Johannesburg and Cape City , as if they were tiny members, declared Brooks. ISPA has 5 classes of membership, specifically : Giant , Medium, Little , affiliate and Honorary. The Tertiary Education and Research Network of S. A. which supplies global and state network services to varsities and operates the South African Research Network ( SANReN ) is an honorary member of ISPA. "ISPA sees UCT and Rhodes joining as an indication of things to come, and as we go forwards we predict having more tertiary education establishments intending to become members. Considering the advantages to be gained by joining as affiliates , especially given the harsh laws ruling the electronic domain, ISPA would definitely like to inspire more schools to think about joining our organisation," he concludes.
