Former Gucci tech charged for hacking
2011-04-07
A disgruntled former computer technician at Gucci's U.S. headquarters in New York City is being accused of hacking into the luxury retailer's computer system and causing over $200,000 in damages.
Prosecutors say 34-year-old Sam Chihlung Yin pleaded not guilty in Manhattan federal court Monday to computer tampering, identity theft, falsifying business records and other charges. He was released without bail. A call to his lawyer was not immediately returned.
Prosecutors say Yin had been fired from the company for abusing his employee discount to buy Gucci items in bulk and then ship them to Asia for resale.
Prosecutors say Yin hacked into the company's network and deleted several virtual servers, shut down a storage area network, and deleted a disk containing the corporate mailboxes from an email server.
